Most people associate Manhattan with the shining lights of Broadway - many a tune has been sung about the iconic stretch of theaters, studios and performance spaces, all of which are located between 41st and 54th streets, between Sixth and Eighth avenues and have at least 500 seats - and for good reason: Shows born in the Big Apple go on to tour the world, generating major buzz for The Empire City and its brightest shining stars. With 40 operating theaters in the iconic Theater District, art and culture are just outside the front doors of most Theater District apartments.
World-famous shows became household names thanks to their amazing runs on Broadway, including well-known classics like “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Cats,” “Les Miserables” and modern-day hits like “Wicked,” “Jersey Boys” and “Avenue Q.” Older shows, including “My Fair Lady” and “Fiddler on the Roof,” have enjoyed long-running residences on Broadway, giving multiple generations of theater-lovers the chance to experience the live performances firsthand. Just outside the sparkling marquee lights and displays of Times Square, near less-touristy hubs and Theater District apartments, smaller, non-Broadway theaters treat locals and visitors to more intimate, first-run shows that may someday make their way to the massive stages of the Gershwin, Hilton and the Broadway.
But there’s more to life in Theater District apartments than convenient live performances. Neighborhood favorites like Aureole, db Bistro Moderne and Esca are all Zagat rated and recommended, but spots like the Glass House Tavern, Joe Allen, Junior’s and Virgil’s all offer hearty portions that keep visitors and locals coming back for more. Scattered among the area’s vast restaurant options are local bars and clubs that amp up the neighborhood’s already dramatic atmosphere, including Bar Centrale - a hidden gem lounge that has few tourists - and go-to cocktail spot and piano bar, The Rum House.
Getting around the neighborhood and into other corners of the city is a breeze, thanks to the area’s walkability and the nearby transit stops just steps from most Theater District apartments and businesses. Restaurant Row in revitalized Hell’s Kitchen is just a few minutes away on foot, as is Central Park; stroll the streets of the Upper East Side in just 20 minutes by subway, or head down to the Village and peruse the funky shops and restaurants in less than 25. The train straight north to Columbia University makes for a 20-minute trip, as does a train straight south to Downtown Brooklyn. The Theater District’s central location and access to all Manhattan subway lines makes for unmatched convenience in a city where location is truly everything.
