Jack Hawes
For Jack Hawes, Regional Project Manager for Seattle and Northern California in Equity’s Condo division, the business case taking a seat on the Diversity Council is a strong one.
“I joined for two reasons, really. Equity’s been very good to me, and you need to give back, not just take. But it’s also because our sales program for condos has for many years been targeted to one culture and we needed to change – frankly, it was costing us sales,” he said.
Jack sees his role on the Council as one where he can “spread the program in the Pacific Northwest and get a better understanding of what diversity means and how this affects our business.” The results, for Jack, are tangible. “From both a leasing and sales side, we need to know what it takes to negotiate and sell our product,” he said. “Some cultures like to bargain more than others, some won’t deal with women – we need to have a better understanding of what we need to do for people from different cultures that are looking to purchase.”
This focus on measurable results is one way to keep the program, in Jack’s words, “fresh and moving.” He and the rest of the Council have “all agreed that we need to keep bringing new ideas, and not start out with a bang just to let it get stale six month later.”
