It’s easy to assume that by serving on the Diversity Council, Yvonne Hill, Area Manager in San Diego, wants to put the issue at the forefront of employees’ minds. But like a lot of assumptions, this one fills in the blanks without knowing the whole story.
“I want diversity to be second nature for us at Equity, not something that’s necessarily a conscious thought. I want people to be aware of differences and embrace them without judging,” she said.
It’s something that’s come up frequently in her years in the property management industry. “If a resident tells you he doesn’t want staff in his house while his wife is alone, that’s when you need to be aware. It’s okay if you don’t like it, but at least you need to understand why it is. Diversity is about a lot more than just the color of your skin, it’s how you make decisions,” she said.
Yvonne’s goal for her time on the Diversity Council is simple. “I am comfortable being myself at Equity and I want to extend that feeling to others,” she said. “A lot of things that we learn as kids we take out into the workforce, but diversity is one of those things that we’re learning at work and taking back home.”
